#mywholehome| The Un-Home Tour Series with Carmel of Our Fifth House

#WHOLEHOMESERIES.png
“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”
— C.S. LEWIS

How many times have you scrolled through Instagram or Pinterest and struggled with the images you see believing that the life being portrayed in those images is a far cry from what yours may look like ?

My heart behind this series is to tackle the decades-long saga of comparison and the overwhelming sense each of us feels to perform or measure up to an ideal standard of beauty and perfection—particularly in the area of our homes.

If you’re anything like me then you’ve probably struggled, more times than you’d likely want to admit, with those haunting thoughts of not measuring up to what you see out there or comparing your life to others you see as you scroll…and scroll…and scroll.

Behind those perfect little squares and snippets of reality are real people dealing with real things while living their very real lives. I’d like to take you ‘behind the curtain’ and give you all an opportunity to go even deeper with the women you follow and connect with. You’ll hear parts of their heart that you have likely never had a chance to hear before. You’ll hear the stories of their lives and, more importantly, their homes. You’ll connect with some of their fears and delight in many of their lives’ greatest triumphs.

These interviews with the women that you love, admire and are inspired by are meant to act as a collective sigh for not only each of us participating but for each one of you out there who will read this and take part in the conversation each week.

While you may not see all the mess that home brings as we walk this path alongside us, the words and sentiments shared by these girls will surely have greater impact than any picture ever could. It is my hope that you will take a moment to think about the meaning and purpose behind the spaces in your homes and the stories that have unfolded inside them. No matter where you’ve lived or how many homes you’ve had or how hard-to-embrace the narrative may be, your home is meant to be a place of belonging and retreat and restoration. As you enter this space each week, I pray the stories shared hear do just that. That they open your heart and mind up to your own life and home and the stories that continue to unfold inside each of them.

What does ‘home’ mean to you? What do you want others to feel when they enter/spend time in your home?

Home to me means [that] you are safe to be who you are, and you are free to be known.    I want people who enter our home to feel welcome.  We have the kind of home where friends don't feel like they need to be invited over, they just come.  And I love that my husband and I open our home that way!  There's nothing better than a casual drop-in, wine on the porch and just chatting the night away!

Tell us the story of your home. To you, what sets it apart or makes it unique aside from the fact that you and your family are the ones who live in it?

Moving to Charleston was a dream I tucked away in my heart the very first time I visited the area 18 years ago on my honeymoon.  My husband grew up vacationing here as a child because his parents owned a home on Kiawah Island, a nearby island.  He and I would talk about one day retiring in the area. And then three and half years ago while we were heading home from a spring break week in Charleston we looked at each other and said, "Why are we waiting 'til retirement?"  We decided to jump!  We put our Lexington, Kentucky home (our fifth house) on the market, and it sold 2 weeks later.  Our sixth house has been a dream come true for us.  And we've loved this home SO much.  But we're actually in the process of building our seventh house (which is very close to where we live now) because we stumbled across an open lot for sale that has a little more privacy than our current house.  Our new build should be done some time next year!

How would you describe your personal home style?

That's always a tough one for me to answer.  My interior style doesn't exactly fit into a box or a nice, neat category.  It, like me, is a mixture.  ;)  It's a little bit traditional, a little bit modern, color and pattern filled.  I like spaces that feel inviting and cozy.  And I gravitate towards a casual vibe that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Proudest DIY?   I'm pretty proud of the tile work I did in our powder room!

How have you embraced your own story? I turned 40 a couple weeks ago, and I know it sounds totally cliche, but there really is a clarity that washes over you.  Experience has given way to feeling more confident in being the woman God's created me to be.  It's pretty amazing to not just know what God says about you, but to actually BELIEVE it.

fallscreenporch.JPG

What is your favorite space in your home?

Our screen porch, hands down.  Having grown up in Southern California the idea of a screen porch was relatively foreign to me, and the novelty of having one has yet to wear off.

If you could share one thing about yourself with readers that you've perhaps never shared publicly or via social media, what would it be?

I've shared bits and pieces of my childhood, but I've never really shared all of it.  Some of it feels shameful, or like I'm betraying those that I love.  Much of my growing up story only a handful of close friends know.  A part of the reason I keep that part of my story so closed off from social media is to protect my children.  I don't want to taint their view or relationships with their grandfather.  My dad is and was a good dad.  But he was and is a complicated person.  Our relationship is special and I love him dearly, but it hasn't always been easy.

kitchen_blackhood.JPG

What was life like for you growing up in your childhood home?

I grew up with two loving parents.  My parents worked really hard to put me through private school and to give me the best start in life they possibly could.  My mom is an artist, and our home was a reflection of that.  My dad ran a commercial landscaping business, and our backyard was like an oasis.  They are each creative in their own way and that definitely had an influence on me.

My parents got divorced when I was 13, and that 13th year of my life was transformative.  I grew up a lot that year.   And looking back now, I wouldn't change a thing.  God has a way of turning our brokenness into something really beautiful.  Much of who I am today, is because of the fire I walked through as a teenager.

If there was one piece of advice that you could give to others as to how to embrace their home and their story, what would that sound like?

The best gift you can give yourself is to let yourself be known.  Truly.  You can't forge a real relationship with anyone if you hide who you are.  Let your friends in.  Let them really see you.  Share your story.  And your home.  Without the makeup and the perfectly fluffed pillows.  It'll be the best thing you do for yourself, I promise!

5 WAYS YOU CAN USE VINTAGE FINDS IN YOUR HOME RIGHT NOW

Okay, so if you've followed me for a while you know that one of the reasons this little gig was even named RH was a tribute not only to God's restoring of my own life BUT to honor my love for vintage and antique finds.

While my personal home style may have shifted and changed over the years, my desire to add character and personality to the homes we live in through pieces from forgotten times has not.

Nothing adds flavor, personality or a more lived-in feel more than an architecturally salvaged kitchen utensil turned artwork or a vintage textile from the early 19th century turned well, into whatever your mind can imagine.

For me, that's the thrill of it all, honestly. From finding the perfect hunt locations locally and abroad, to getting creative with how you use it in your own home, there's nothing quite like using items like these to help a house feel more like home. After all, at the end of the day, that's what we wall want. We all want a space that lends to bringing out the best in not just those who dwell within the four walls we call home but to those who enter as well. We want a space that feels collected and gathered instead of unboxed and sterile. We want a place that feels good and snuggly and cozy and welcoming. Too many adjectives? Never.

Anyhow, I thought I'd share a bit about my thrifting and antiquing process that you can customize to fit your lifestyle and personal 'style profile'.

Because much of our home has a pretty neutral base, I like to pick up pieces that will easily transition from season to season and from style to style. This means that over the years most of the items I have grabbed in my outings will always fit not matter where we go or what kind of home we live in.

With that in mind, here are 5 ways, you can use some of your favorite finds or how your finds can become your favorite in your own home:

FIVE WAYS YOU CAN USE VINTAGE FINDS IN YOUR HOME

DO | USE PAINTED ART IN ANY ROOM

I love vintage art. Whether it’s paint by number or an old acrylic there’s just something about it that gives me all the good vibes. Adding vintage art in any space can give it more character and a more lived-in feel but I especially love using vintage items in unexpected places. Try hanging some smaller pieces in the bathroom, powder room or kitchen and reserve your larger finds for the living room or bedroom.

DO | STYLE THOSE SHELVES

I am pretty sure I have a disease because every few months or so. (Ok, weeks) I get the itch to change out the items on our shelves in our home. This is a no-fuss, easy way to change up small details in a room without making a huge impact. One of my most favorite items to use when doing so are vintage and antique finds that I’ve collected over time. Because we live in small space with limited storage, the shelves in our dining area serve double duty as holders of items I hold near and dear as well as storing functional items I use in our home and specifically in our kitchen like bowls and plates.

DO | USE SOMETHING UNEXPECTED ON YOUR WALLS

Speaking of unexpected, this is a hat I found at a local thrift. It was handmade in Thailand and I was so excited to find the perfect spot for it in our guest room at that time. When looking around your local flea markets, thrifts or garage sales don’t pass by anything that speaks to you even if you don’t know what you’ll do with it at that time. If the price is right, snatch it up. Sometimes I find that the true inspiration comes much later. I do, however, have one rule: if I bring something in that doesn’t immediately serve a purpose, I must get rid of one thing in order to make space for it. It’s a small-space rule.

DO | REPURPOSE UNIQUE VINTAGE + ANTIQUE FURNITURE PIECES

I die. This space of Chelsea’s from Style Mutt Home is a great example of how you can mix and match the new and old, vintage and antique to get the feel of a well-loved, collected space that invites folks to stay for a while. I want to hone in on her use of the camp table as a coffee table. I love how unafraid she was to take something that was meant for one reason and repurpose it in her home for another.

DO | USE THEM ON YOUR TABLETOP

Dining in? This is the perfect time to style those wooden cutting boards or vintage glasses amongst your favorite dinner plates and serveware. 90% of what you see below came from my local thrift. From the candlesticks to the plates at each table setting you see, I used secondhand items to turn this inspirational tabletop into something beautiful. It doesn’t take a ton of thought or energy to create something that is unique to your style or taste.

GIFTS FOR THE HOME

Of course I’m beginning here with gifts for the home because it’s just so stinking fun to decorate and just happens to be one of my favorite areas to gift. Of special mention below (while ALL of them are my faves) are the throw (top left) and the diffuser. Throws are an easy gift as they can serve so any purposes in the home and I’m all about my oils and diffusers right now for not only making our home smell scrumptious but for fighting nasty colds and germs throughout the season.

GIFTS FOR KITCHEN + ENTERTAINING

Okay, maybe I lied. Give me all the fun products and gadgets and decor for the kitchen. I know you guys are with me. I absolutely adore anything in my home that gives me the opportunity to add a bit of flair and personality and from the items below, the vintage wall basket and those striped linen napkins. My goodness, guys. You’re probably thinking OMG I have enough linens. I just need you to know there’s no such thing. The striped ones below and somewhat of a staple and can go with just about any tabletop decor or design. They have quickly become some of my faves. I even love taking this beyond the table to our bathroom. I love the idea of placing napkins such as these in a basket on the counter in a bathroom and having them at the ready for guests to use and toss into a separate basket after each use.

GIFTS FOR HIM

I’m pretty sure Larry wil get all of this for Christmas. (surprise Larry!) This one was so fun to make as I absolutely adore shopping for friends but I LOVE shopping for my mister. Two of my favorites here are the docking station because it’s handmade and something you won’t see everyday. It’s perfect for a nightstand if you have space for it there or for the top of a dresser in a bedroom or closet. Second fave would be that Le Labo scent set. These are OUR favorite scents. I love that Le Labo is natural and made from some the highest quality oils. You best believe they are all worth the price (a little more on the expensive side) and the bonus…they’re for both male and female. Don’t tell Larry but when I buy them for him…they’re really for me too. Shhhh…

GIFTS FOR HER

OMG. This may sound crazy but this list was harder for me, friends. I’m not sure why but it could have SOMETHING to do with the fact that us girls have so much to choose from and most of us are always buying for ourselves. Just me?

Pics from this list: the Aritzia blanket scarf and the Honest Beauty facial oil. The blanket scarves I’ve literally not been able to live without over the past couple of years. They’ve been wrapped around me only, me + my kids at sports events and even served as comfort on the grass, as the name states, as a blanket when I’ve forgotten to pack one. It’s a staple as far as I’m concerned and I’m also slightly obsessed with facial oils over the year. I’ve seen a real difference in my complexion since I decided to begin using them and this one from Honest is one of the best.

These lists are by no means exhaustive but I hope you find something that you love or that you know friends and family will love. Thanks for letting me share some of my favorite things with you all!
